Project Title: Research on Late Quaternary Climatic and Environmental Changes in Boundary of Monsoon Regions in Northwest China

Award & Grade: The second-class National Prize for Natural Sciences, P.R.China in 2007.

Brief Introduction to the Project:

Supported by Natural Science Foundation of China and Ministry of Technology of P. R. China, Professor Chen Fahu and academician Li Jijun and other scientists initiated the systematic research of late quaternary climatic and environmental changes in boundary of monsoon regions in Northwest China, who won the second-class National Prize for Natural Sciences in 2007 for tremendous progress achieved in this research.

Highlights include the following points: (1) Regional standard loess stratigraphy is built and the precession-driven mode of regional climate variation is innovated. They found the humidity gap was increasing between glacial and inter-glacial periods, which promotes the Chinese loess research and also contributes a lot to the climate cycling theory. (2) They found huge lakes existed in deserts located in modern marginal regions during MIS3 periods or even earlier times, when was more humid, pushing forward of research Chinese late quaternary research. (3) The abrupt climatic changes were also found during Holocene period, which contains many drought events and shows severe temperature fluctuations. They found comparatively stable climatic variation during last interglacial period. These achievements draw great attention from academic group and are cited a lot internationally.
