Lanzhou University Prof. Zhang Tingjun publishes paper in Remote Sensing of Environment

Recently Prof. Zhang Tingjun (Corresponding author), the 2015 postgraduate Xiao Xiongxin from School of Resources and Environment and their collaborators published a paper titled “Support Vector Regression Snow-depth Retrieval Algorithm Using Passive Microwave Remote Sensing Data” in the top journal Remote Sensing of Environment. The study was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (91325202) and the National Major Scientific Research Project (2013CBA01802).

Xiao's research combined passive microwave remote sensing data and measured ground data to perform snow depth inversion. The newly established method - Support Vector Regression, is a snow depth inversion model based on different types of surface cover and periods of snow cover. The inversion model not only exerts a great impact, but also turns to be an effective reduction of the saturation effect. Compared and contrasted with the four snow depth inversion algorithms available internationally, it is found that the new snow depth inversion algorithm proposed in this paper stands out with the highest accuracy and minimum error, and it can accurately estimate the snow depth of Eurasia continent and the northern hemisphere.

Remote Sensing of Environment is a SCI-1 zone journal. Its latest impact factor for 2016-2017 is 6.265 and the average impact factor for the last five years 7.653.
