On the basis of the former Office of Dunhuang Studies established in 1979, the Institute of Dunhuang Studies was founded in 1995 with two branches: the Office of Dunhuang Documents and the Office of Religion Studies, and two affiliations: the Editorial Department of Journal of the Dunhuang Studies and Lanzhou University Information Center for Dunhuang Turpan Society, China. In 1998, it became an institution entitled to offering doctorate degree program in Historical Documentology including Dunhuang Studies and Paleography and again in 1999 it was approved by the Ministry of Education to be a key research base in Humanities and Social Sciences.
