Prof. Chih-Yung Chien talks on liberal education at LZU

At the invitation of LZU, Prof. Chih-Yung Chien, a professor in experimental particle physics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the Johns Hopkins University and chair professor of National Chengchi University in Taiwan, made a lecture titled “The talent cultivation in the 21st century—on liberal education” as the 41st lecture at the famous “Cuiying Forum”of LZU on the evening of April 26th. Present at the forum were students and principals from the School of History and Culture, Cuiying Honors College, and Development and Planning Office.

To start his lecture, Prof. Chien asked a question “What’s your dream?” He pointed out that everyone has a dream which gives us the courage and motivation to start though it doesn’t always come true. It is bliss when your dream, profession and career are in common. Afterwards, he introduced the liberal education in his opinion and which has been applied successfully in National Chengchi University in Taiwan. According to him, the so-called “liberal education” refers to make people knowledgeable and elegant, aiming at cultivate all-round talents through 8 new general courses which provide broad exposure to multiple disciplines, learning strategies, and the necessary ways of thinking with the spirit of teamwork so as to cultivate their ways and ability of study. Besides, he interpreted his own opinion on knowledge, subjects, and employment. He also emphasized the importance to integrate humanistic quality and rational thinking ability, encouraging the teachers and students in LZU to treasure our own value and undertake the mission to construct northwest China.

Afterwards, he made another lecture named “On the curriculum design and teaching of liberal education” for Cuiying Honors College on the afternoon of April 28th. At the lecture, he introduced the curriculum and education mode in Boya Academy of National Chengchi University in Taiwan. In reply to students’ questions, he answered, “Rationality gives me power to stand up; sensibility makes my life better”, taking his own experience for example. The lecture lasted for almost 4 hours and every one was impressed by his resourceful and humorous words.
