The School of Mathematics and Statistics of Lanzhou University was founded in July, 2004, which is based on the Department of Mathematics of the university. It has been more than 70 years since the inaugural class of mathematical science enrolled in 1946. Under the guidance of two pioneering mathematicians Professor Qingyi Chen and Professor Wenyuan Chen, faculties and students made great progress in both the teaching and researching, and many graduates became the elite members at their operating post. Now the school offers 2 undergraduate programs, 6 master graduate programs, 4 Ph.D graduate programs and one post doctorate working station. In particular, the school is qualified to grant the doctor degree of level 1 discipline of mathematical science, which means the school can provide all the mathematical education of doctor program in the future.
The teaching and researching body of the School is made up of five researching institute, Pure Mathematics, Computation Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Operational Research and Control Theory, and Branch of Advanced Mathematics.
From modest beginnings in 1946 as a single department of Physics, the School of Physical Science and Technology was established in 1999, as one of the most distinctive parts at the LanzhouUniversity. It is composed of 2 departments (Physics, materials science), 12 research institutes, 1 state teaching center for experimental physics and 1 Key Lab for Magnetism and Magnetic Materials of the Ministry of Education. The School has more than 150 staffs (including 16 professors, 30 associate professors, and also, supporting technicians and postdoctoral research fellows), enrolled with 1170undergraduate students and 400 graduate students.
With the policies of “Research-intensive school” and “Open school to the world and community”, the School has always been featured with researches on magnetic information storage, functional magnetic materials, luminiferous materials, semiconductor physics, semiconductor devices, nonlinear physics, etc. Thus, the School is an ongoing generator of new knowledge. In recent five years, the School has been granted with 46 research projects and 11 patents. Meanwhile, the School has made cooperative agreements with 6 academic organizations abroad.
The School provides its students with the understanding of the basic elements of physics and materials science, the training of modeling, the preparing and measuring techniques in scientific researches, as well as the opportunity to participate in forefront research. Some of the graduated students have pursued distinguished careers in research and education, domestically or abroad. However, others enjoy equally satisfying careers in business, industry, and government. Many combine their PhD degrees in science with medical, law, or business degrees and are uniquely prepared to make creative contributions to the modern world.
If you decide to start or continue your scientific study in Lanzhou University, the School ofPhysical Science and Technology will heartily give you its open arms.(updated on Oct. 17th, 2013)
College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering came from the Chemistry Department founded in 1946 in the then National Lanzhou University. A solid foundation was laid for the department in the early time by the pioneering work of a group of well-known scholars returning from abroad (Zhang Huaipu, Yuan Hanqing, Chang Linding, Ge Fuxiang, Fang Cheng, Zuo Zongqi, Chen Shiwei, Wang Luowen, etc). In the 1950s and early 60s, more experts either retuning from abroad or coming from other parts of China, such as Cheng Pu, Wei Jingquan, Liu Youcheng, Zhu Ziqing, Huang Wenkui, Chen Yaozu, greatly strengthened the faculty in both chemistry teaching and research.
In 1954, the Chemistry Department started its postgraduate program. From 1957, however, the development of the department was severely affected by a series of political movements across the whole country. But many faculty members in the department continued their teaching and research work, thus making extraordinary contributions to the quick recovery and fast development of the disciplines of chemistry in Lanzhou University.
After 1976, the Chemistry Department enjoyed a glorious period. With the support from government funding agencies, the Research Institute of Organic Chemistry (1978), the Center of Instrumental Analysis (1982) and the State Key Laboratory of Applied Organic Chemistry (1986) were successively established. In July, 1998, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering was founded from the Chemistry Department.
Current research fields include Organic chemistry, Inorganic chemistry, Analytical chemistry, Physical chemistry and Polymer science, etc.
After more than 70 years of development with the persistent efforts of several generations, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering now has an outstanding teaching and research team. The chemistry discipline belongs to the key construction disciplines of national “985 Project” and “211 Project”. In September, 2017, chemistry was selected in the “double first class” construction disciplines list of China. The college enjoys the reputation of nurturing students who made significant impacts upon graduation and made excellent research achievements. It has now become a fundamental base in the western China for scientific research and for the training of high-level talents for the chemical industry.

In 1955, Professor Zhu Guangya was assigned to establish the majors of the Nuclear Physics and Radiochemistry. The two majors were ascribed to the 505 Research Institute (the other name is Physics Research Laboratory) under Lanzhou University. In 1959, Physics Research Laboratory was changed to the Modern Physics Department of Lanzhou University under the leadership of Jiang Longji, the president of Lanzhou University then. At the beginning, most teachers and researchers were from abroad, Beijing University and Nankai University. In 1999, the Radiochemistry became one of the majors of the School of Chemistry and Chemistry Engineering, and Nuclear Physics one of the majors of the School of Physics Science and Technology successively. In 2006, in order to develop the predominance of key disciplines, the School of Nuclear Science and Technology of Lanzhou University was founded on the almagaration of Particle Physics, Nuclear Physics, and the special discipline Radiochemistry.
Currently, the School of Nuclear Science and Technology of Lanzhou University have five undergraduate majors: 1) Nuclear Physics, 2) Radiochemistry, 3) Nuclear Technology, 4) Radiation Protection and Environmental Engineering, and 5) Nuclear Fuel and Nuclear Chemical; four M.A. majors: 1) Particle Physics and Nuclear Physics, 2) Atomic and Molecular Physics, 3) Nuclear Technology and Nuclear Technology Applications, and 4) Radiochemistry; two Ph.D. majors: 1) Particle Physics and Nuclear Physics, and 2) Radiochemistry. In addition, Nuclear Physics and Radiochemistry are the earliest majors established and entitled to enroll Bachelor, Master’s and Doctoral degree candidates in the universities in China.
The School of Nuclear Science and Technology has the State Key Discipline of Particle Physics and Nuclear Physics supported by “211 Project” and the Research Platform of Fusion Neutron and Highly Charged Ion Physics granted by “985 Project”. As the oldest nationally accredited school of public health in the five northwestern provinces of China, the origin of School of Public Health can be tracked back to the Department of Hygiene which was founded by Lanzhou Medical College in 1959. However, it was closed down in 1962 and all the enrolled students were educated in Department of Medicine instead. In 1984, according to the urgent demand of health and epidemic prevention in Gansu province, the Department of Hygiene was approved to establish again. Later, the department was renamed as Department of Preventive Medicine in 1989 and as Department of Public Health in 2001. It was in 2002 the Department of Public Health was renamed as School of Public Health with Professor Hongyuan Chen as the honorary dean and part-time professor, who is an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and professor of Nanjing University. In 2005, one year after the mergence of Lanzhou Medical College into Lanzhou University, Lanzhou University School of Public Health was rebuilt.
Currently, our school consists of 6 institutes, Institute of Occupational and Environmental Health, Institute of Toxicology, Institute of Epidemiology and Health Statistics, Institute of Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Institute of Social Medicine and Health Management and Institute of Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health.
