LZU students gain excellent results in 4th NUMC

Three students from Cuiying Honors College of Lanzhou University went through to the finals of the Fourth National Undergraduate Mathematics Contest (NUMC) on behalf of Gansu Province. The finals ended on March 16th, 2013, at the University of Electronic Science and Technology in Chengdu. Associate Professor Wang Haiming of our university's School of Mathematics and Statistics led the student team.

In the contest, the three students brought honor to Cuiying Honors College. In the professional mathematics contest, Wang Guodong, a 2010 entrant in the mathematics class, won the second prize, only one-point behind the champion; and Gao Chen, a 2011 mathematics entrant, won third prize. Ruan Shanming, a 2010 entrant, came second in the non-professional category as a physics student. It is the first time for LZU to win the second prize in this category in the past two years. Of all the contest participants, there were seven students from Gansu Province, of whom three were from Lanzhou University. The other four students, from Lanzhou University of Technology and Gansu Agricultural University, came joint third in the non-mathematician category.

During the preliminaries of the contest, which were held in October 2012 in 28 provinces of China, 283 students were selected to enter the finals. In the finals, there were 19 first-prize winners, 28 second-prize winners and 44 third-prize winners in the professional category; and 35, 53 and 90 prize winners for the first, second and third prizes respectively in the non-mathematicians category.
