Prof. David K. Ferguson visits LZU

Professor David K. Ferguson, former vice president of International Organization of Palaeobotany (IOP) and director of the Institute of Paleontology, University of Vienna, paid an academic visit to the Institute of Geology and Palaeontology at LZU on Dec. 5-9 at the invitation of Professor Sun Bonian and Associate Professor Yan Defei from School of Geological Sciences and Mineral Resources and the Laboratory of Western Mineral Resources.

During the visit, Professor Ferguson introduced the latest scientific advances in the field of international palaeobotany and some achievements and features of internationally renowned laboratory. He explained in detail how to develop the original and leading research and complete high-level papers and also introduced the major academic journals on paleontology and some instructions for paper contributors. In addition, Professor Ferguson also observed the fossil collection at the Lab of Paleontology, introduced some advanced experimental methods and offered some specific guidance to the postgraduates.

Professor Ferguson delivered a lecture entitled “New Methods and New Ideas in Paleontology Research” in the lecture hall of School of Geological Sciences and Mineral Resources on December 6th. After the lecture, he had a heated discussion with the teachers and students. Professor Ferguson spoke highly of the paleontological academic level and new experimental conditions at LZU and expressed his interests in the cooperation with LZU in the future.
