Profesor Yang Shu, the Director of Institute for Central Asia Studies of Lanzhou University(ICAS), attended the conference for the 22th anniversary of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Dec. 11 at the invitation of Mr. Nurlan Yermekbayev, Kazakhstan Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, and Mrs. Saule Yermekbayeva. Professor Yang met with Aidar Abishev, Kazakhstan Minister Counsellor (next to ambassador in position) in China and Mr. Oman, the chief representative of Kazakhstan Railway Corp in China.
Aidar and Oman graduated from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and learned Chinese at LZU from 1993 to 1994. Al-Farabi Kazakh National University has signed a cooperative contract with LZU in 1993. According to the contract, 10 students from Kazakhstan will be admitted to LZU to study Chinese in each of 5 years with a scholarship provided by LZU. Many of those students have played a great role in the bilateral exchanges between China and Kazakhstan.
