On December 24, 2015, a symposium was held at the Base Campus of the Lanzhou University (LZU), commemorating the 110th anniversary of Mr. Jiang Longji’s Birthday, an outstanding member of the Communist Party of China, a former proletarian revolutionist and an outstanding Marxist educator.
Ms. Xian Hui, member of the Gansu Provincial Party Committee and the executive vice governor, Gao Zhiling, vice director of the Publicity Department of the Gansu Provincial Party Committee and the director of the Gansu Provincial Civilization Office, Wang Jiayi, director of the Gansu Provincial Education Department, relatives of Mr. Jiang Longji, the author of The Biography of Jiang Longji (updated version) and The Last Fourteen Years in Jiang Longji’s Life, the party and administrative leaders of the LZU, assistant to the president and representatives of each administrative departments, the middle-level units, the alumni, retired veteran cadres, teachers and students of the LZU and medias attended the symposium. The symposium was chaired by Wang Cheng, the president of the LZU.
MS. Xian Hui referred that Mr. Jiang Longji dedicated all his efforts to the liberation of the Chinese people and the education of the Party. He made great contribution to the cause of the higher education in China. He was not only outstanding in the educational practice and theory but also firm in the pursuit of ideals and noble morality. We commemorated the 110th anniversary of Mr. Jiang Longji with the aim of learning, inheriting and carrying forward the Jiang Longji Spirit, studying and developing Jiang Longji’s educational thoughts, consciously following the basic values and universal code of conduct of being “patriotic, dedicated, honest and friendly”, combing individual destiny with the national future and working hard to attain the grand goal of completing the building of a moderately prosperous society.
Ms. Xian Hui highlighted that the LZU was the only key national university in Gansu Province and had cultivated a number of talents and made great contribution to the economic and social development of Gansu Province. He wished the LZU could inherit and carry forward the Jiang Longji Spirit, take over the mission of meeting the people’s demands for a good university and strengthen distinctive features and traditions in administration. Furthermore, the LZU should combine the reform and development of the university with the prosperity of the Gansu Province and provide the economic and social development of the Gansu Province with stronger intellectual support. The LZU should focus on opening up to the west, scientific and technological innovation, optimization and upgrading of industrial structure and targeted poverty alleviation, so as to enhance the completion of the building of a moderately prosperous society and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
Wang Hansong, Party Secretary of the LZU delivered a speech on behalf of the LZU. He reviewed over Mr. Jiang Longji’s glorious career in revolution and education and spoke highly of Mr. Jiang Longji’s historical contribution and educational thoughts. He highlighted that the LZU was on the way of establishing world-class university and disciplines, which would be both a great opportunity and a major challenge for the LZU. The LZU should keep a clear mind and grasp the rare opportunities. With the responsibility in mind, the LZU commemorated Mr. Jiang Longji for his noble characters, excellent working attitudes, loyalty to the Party, concerns for the people, respect for democracy, truth-seeking quality, rigid self-discipline and lenient attitude to others. The LZU commemorated Mr. Jiang Longji with the aim of learning about his education thoughts, adhering to appropriate administrative principles, following the law of education, emphasizing on good styles of study and school, advancing with the times and attending to practices. We should inherit and develop the unfinished business of his, strengthen morality in education, deepen comprehensive reform, join hands and forge ahead to build the LZU into a world-class university and make unremitting efforts for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
Wang Cheng referred that Mr. Jiang Longji’s great foresight and unremitting efforts had laid a solid foundation for the development and construction of the LZU, especially in establishing the good tradition of focusing on teaching and cultivation quality. In the new period, the LZU should follow the revolutionary predecessors in upholding lofty ideals, leading a simple life, strengthening self-discipline, focusing on innovation and reality, deepening comprehensive reform, elevating the quality of personnel training, constantly improving the capacity in collaborative innovation, firmly following the road centering on the elevation of quality and providing the national and local economic and social development with stronger talent and intellectual support.
Ms. Jiang Yiman, daughter of Mr. Jiang Longji, former party secretary and executive vice chairman of the Chinese Red Cross, Professor Miao Gaosheng, the author of The Biography of Jiang Longji (updated version), Mr. Duan Yishi, a famous theoretical physicist, Professor Zhang Kefei, curator of the Lanzhou University Museum and Shi Zhilin, a PhD. Student from the School of History and Culture delivered speeches respectively.
During the symposium, “The Biography of Jiang Longji (updated version)”, which was compiled under the direction of Professor Miao Gaosheng and published by the Lanzhou University Press, was formally issued.
Before the symposium, participants from each unit laid flower baskets to the copper statue of Jiang Longji to show reverence and remembrance.
