2016 Martial Arts Tournament for College Students opened at LZU on July18th. 81 team with 657 athletes from 78 colleges nationwide, including Zhejiang University, Fudan Unveristy, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Zhongshan University, Xiamen University and Renmin University of China, would engage in fierce competition in Lanzhou in next four days. The tournament, hosted by LZU and sponsored by ZTE Corporate, included 27 categories, such as boxing, armed combat, combat and skills and trick series of martial arts grading, as well as 1,681 individual competitions. Athletes would be divided into three groups for each competition.
This year’s tournament for college students would be attended by the most colleges and athletes in the history of this event, and it had set up the most competition categories, said Qiao Deping, the secretary of the organization committee. He added that with competition for amateurs set up for the first time, this competition engaged more athletes ever nationwide. This was the first time that Macao University took part in the tournament, marking the beginning of colleges from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan participating in this event. As for the host, LZU has five world champions in such high-level martial arts competition and two champions of the Asian Games, winning 85 national gold medals in total.
Li Renfang, coach of Macao team said they felt honored to attend such game, and looked forward to have good grade, too. With four athletes and two coaches, the team of Macao will make appearance in ten individual competitions. Macao University has always attached much importance to the popularization of Martial Arts, and expects better communication and increased mutual learning with colleges from inland China.
The four-day tournament was closed on July 21st. After fierce competition, 183 medals were born for individual competitions. LZU, Zhejiang University and Tianjin University of Technology ranked top three in medal tally with 16, 14, and 12 gold medals respectively. Besides, LZU was also awarded Best Organization Award.
Zhang Jisheng, head of judge of this tournament, said that this tournament had several highlights. First, leaders have attached great importance to this tournament, with Yang Liguo, secretary of Joint Secretariat from Students Sports Association of Department of Education, as the director of the organization committee, and Wang Gang, vice chairman of Sports Association of National College Students, as executive director. Secondly, this year’s tournament is attended by largest number of athletes and teams in the tournament history and has set up the most individual competitions with the largest organization scale. Thirdly, with competition for amateurs set up for the first time, this competition allowed for competition and communication between professional athletes and the amateurs. Fourthly, athletes of Team A and Team B have fulfilled their potentials and improved their skills in this competition. Finally, this tournament has successfully achieved three “no”s, or no complaints, no harm, no impostors.
Li Qiaoling, general head of judge of this tournament, said that the stadium and gymnasium field were well constructed, that the service provided by 200 volunteers deserved compliment, and the working environment was excellent.
This is a most sports event hosted by LZU.
Notes: Team A is composed of students enrolled into university with lower grades; Team B, students from sport universities, i.e. students who have participated in national skills and trick series of martial arts grading, championships, and traditional tournament; and Team C, students enrolled into university without lower grades.
