Conference for 70th anniversary of College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of LZU held

 

On the morning of October 16th , the conference for the 70th anniversary of College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Lanzhou University and for the 30th anniversary of the establishment of State Key Laboratory of Applied Organic Chemistry was held in Lanzhou University.

In his address, LZU president Wang Cheng spoke highly of the achievements gained by the chemistry discipline in the past 70 years. He also put forward three  hopes for the future development of the chemistry. Firstly, we should complete the top-level design for the disciplinary development and try to create an academic team with more reasonable and explicit structure. Secondly, we need to promote the crossing and penetration among different subjects and cultivate creative and outstanding talents with international vision and competitiveness. Thirdly, we should strive to produce original achievements which can play an important role in advancing human civilization; meanwhile, we should also have a clear picture about the  national strategic needs, and speed up the transformation of scientific and technological achievements.

Liang Youngmin, dean of College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Lanzhou University, said in his report that they would implement three main strategies, including making college stronger by cultivating more talents, strengthening international cooperation and promoting the quality, to build the chemistry discipline of Lanzhou University into an international top-ranking discipline.

College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Lanzhou University and the State Key Laboratory of Applied Organic have obtained very many award items, including four prestigious national awards in teaching, five state natural science awards, 2 National Prizes for Progress in Science and Technology and 8 National Scientific Conference Awards in scientific research. In addition, in the 2015 natural index ranking of world's major universities and research institutions, the chemistry discipline of Lanzhou University ranked No. 32 in the world, No. 15 in the Asia-Pacific region, and No. 8 in the national universities and colleges. In March 2016, the chemistry discipline of Lanzhou University ranked into the top 1% of ESI  in the world, representing the top level of scientific research of Lanzhou University and even of the Northwest region of China.

Since China’s reform and opening up, 4 graduates of chemistry department of Lanzhou University have been elected as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 14 have been chosen in "Cheung Kong Scholars Program" by the Ministry of Education, and 41 have become the winners of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Outstanding performance and excellent achievements of alumni wins permanent reputation for the chemistry discipline of Lanzhou University .
