National Key R&D Project Declared by Prof. Zhao of School of Life Sciences approved to start

Recently, declared under the leadership of Professor Zhao Zhigang of LZU, the National Key Research and Development Project "The Comprehensive Improvement of Degraded Alpine Ecosystem in the area of Northwestern Sichuan and South Gansu" was approved to start, and the research funds supported by China's Central Government were 18.38 million RMB. It is the first key research and development project that is approved under the leadership of LZU since the new policy of national science and technology plan was implemented.

The project is part of the special item "Study on the Typical Fragile Ecological Restoration and Protection" of National Key Research and Development Plan, including 10 participating units such as LZU, Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources and Chinese Academy of Forestry and six subjects are also included, two of which are undertaken by LZU. Aiming at comprehensive research on the degraded alpine wetland, meadow and desertificated land in the area of Northwestern Sichuan and South Gansu, the project illuminated the evolution mechanism of alpine ecosystems, explored integrated techniques on the restoration and protection of ecosystem, put forward and demonstrated a management and industry mode of alpine animal husbandry with regional characteristics, and thus to realize the sustainable development of regional ecological security and social economy and offer technical support to the comprehensive improvement of degraded alpine ecosystem in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
