Recently, the research team led by Prof. Huang Jianping, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences published a paper entitled “An Accurate Retrieval of Cloud Droplet Effective Radius for Single-Wavelength Cloud Radar” on IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, a globally renowned journal on geoscience and remote sensing. The research breaks through the previous idea of detecting the cloud properties based on the millimeter-wavelength cloud radar backscattered signals and proposes a novel cloud droplet effective radius (CER) retrieval algorithm for cloud radar detection, taking into consideration that electromagnetic waves transmission in clouds is attenuated mainly because of the absorption of cloud water liquid mass, which will sure to solve the problem of large errors existing in many current algorithms and is expected to provide an advanced and reliable algorithm for the integration of ground-space-based radars observation.
