On October 14, a delegation led by U.S. Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns visited Lanzhou University (LZU). Ma Xiaojie, Secretary of the CPC LZU Committee, and Yang Yongping, President of LZU and member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) met with the delegates at Chengguan Campus. Zhang Baojun, Director of Foreign Affairs Office of the People’s Government of Gansu Province, and Wang Wei, Vice President of LZU, attended the meeting.
Ma Xiaojie warmly welcomed Nicholas Burns and his delegation, and introduced the history as well as international cooperation of LZU. He pointed out that LZU has established diversified and pragmatic cooperative relationships with universities in the U.S., winning a good international reputation for its all-round exchanges and high-quality cooperation in recent years. He expressed the hope to further strengthen communication and enhance consensus to facilitate the deeper, broader, and higher level of educational and cultural exchanges and build a solid bridge for people-to-people communication as well as bilateral trust and understanding.
Yang Yongping introduced LZU’s achievements in disciplinary construction, scientific research innovation and talent cultivation. He said LZU has always taken the cooperation with top international universities as a key element of its development. China and the United States share a common vision and have a broad basis for cooperation in climate changes, global health and sustainable development. And universities in both countries are expected to play a more proactive role in global issues. He hoped that the Ambassador and the U.S. Embassy in China will actively facilitate and support exchanges and cooperation between LZU and the U.S. higher education institutions to promote bilateral education collaboration for mutual benefit and win-win results, and jointly push the China-U.S. education partnership to a new height.
Burns expressed his gratitude to LZU for warm reception, and said that educational exchanges are of great significance to enhance bilateral people’s understanding and friendship. This visit will be an opportunity to promote exchanges and cooperation in education, science and technology, and culture between two countries, and support the youth of both countries to strengthen communication. Burns appreciated LZU’s achievements in scientific research and innovation, talent cultivation, etc., hoping that the two sides would, strengthen the cooperation of scholars and student exchanges in related disciplines to boost the in-depth progress of the China-U.S. education ties.
After the meeting, the delegation also discussed and exchanged views with experts and scholars of LZU.
During the visit, the delegation toured around the campus and visited the Management Centre of Scientific Observing Stations.
