Key Laboratory for Magnetism and Magnetic Materials of MOE

The Key Laboratory for Magnetism and Magnetic Materials of Ministry of Education in Lanzhou University is officially recognized in August 2000 by the Ministry of Education. It was established on the basis of magnetic research area in 1958 and further approved toconstruction by the former State Board of Education in December 1993 and was formally opened in June 1996.

The main research work in our laboratory is based on the studying the low-dimensional magnetic materials, such as high-density magnetic recording technology, microscopic magnetic properties of materials, high-frequency soft magnetic thin films. Meanwhile, combined with national demands and academic development, the new material based on information and energy has been carried out. As a result, our laboratory's strategic objectives are as follows: Firstly, based on national needs, we plan to systematically carry out the preparation, characterization, micro-structure characteristics and spectral characteristics of low-dimensional magnetic materials, to build a solid foundation for the development of the technology of magnetic materials and related industry. Secondly, we will develop and improve the scientific system of low-dimensional magnetic materials and investigate the special features of low-dimensional magnetic materials, to establish the new concepts, methods and theories of low-dimensional magnetic materials. Finally, we will bring together a high level of science and technology team to solve the major scientific and technological issues, and build a high-level training, research base and international academic exchange center. Currently, the main research interests of our laboratory are as follows:magnetic recording physics and technology, microscopic magnetic and electronic properties in the low dimensional materials, magnetic multilayer and electronics, magnetic theory and electronic structure calculations, new functional materials and applications. The laboratory has undertook the national “973” project, “863” project, National Natural Science Foundation, Provincial and ministerial level scientific research focus fund, and Corporate research and development. Recently more than 300 papers have been published on the international top magazines such as Phys. Rev. Lett., Nano Lett., Adv. Mater., Appl. Phys. Lett., Chem. Mater., and Nanotechnology et al.

Current in the laboratory, there are 52 fixed staff, including 19 professors, 50 years of age accounted for 68%, 18 associate professors, 40 years of age accounted for 82%, 9lecturers, 5 laboratory technicians, and 1 administrative staff. In particular, two persons obtained the title of “Young and Mid-aged Expert with Outstanding Contribution by the Ministry of Personnel”, two persons awarded “China National Funds for Distinguished Young Scientists”, and nine persons were sponsored by “Program for New Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education”. Moreover, 70% of the total researchershave achieved doctoral degree.

Our laboratory has been established cooperative researches and academic exchange relationships with more than 10 domestic units, such as Institute of Physics, Academy of China Aerospace Group, the 510 Institute, Nanjing University, Shandong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Shanghai Jiaotong University and East China Normal University et al, and with the scientists from more than seven countries, which are the United States, Canada, Germany, Russia, Portugal, Japan, and Korea et al.
