The centre was approved by the Department of Science and Technology, Gansu Provincial Government, on March 17, 2000. WCRDCGI obtained excellence in its evaluations for all provincial centres in 2008 and 2011.

Mission: To innovate and develop integrative technologies for grassland restoration and protection, pasture breeding and seed industrialization, grassland information systems, livestock industry development in the Loess Plateau, turf establishment and grassland ecosystems industry management.
Goal: To construct three bases and one centre, namely: the Scientific and Technological Innovation Base, the Achievement Transformation Base, the Personnel Training Base and the International Exchange Centre.
