The Key Laboratory for Orthopaedics of Gansu Province, originating from the Orthopedics Institute of the Second Hospital of Lanzhou University, was appraised by specialists and subsequently authorized by the Science and Technology Department of Gansu Province in August 2011.
Professor Wang Shuanke, the director of the second department of orthopedics of the Second Hospital of Lanzhou University, is currently the head of the laboratory. Professor Xia Yayi, the director of the first department of orthopedics of the Second Hospital of Lanzhou University, and Professor Wang Yuliang, the deputy director of the first department of orthopedics of the Second Hospital of Lanzhou University, are both the deputy directors of the key laboratory. Professor Wang Kunzheng, the director of the first department of orthopedics of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University School of Medicine, is the director of the academic Committee of the key laboratory. The laboratory concentrates on the construction of academic echelon. There are twenty-eightresearch specialists at the lab. Among them, twenty-four employees are of senior technician,one employee is of intermediate technician and three employees are of primary technician;seventeen have doctor’s degrees, five have master’s degrees, two have bachelor’s degrees and four are doctoral candidates.
The laboratory has a brand new research building with a total area of 1,500 square meters. In order to meet the requirements of scientific research, the key laboratory has eight testing laboratories, including a Cell Biology Laboratory, a Molecular Biology Laboratory, an Animal Physiology Laboratory, an Electrophysiology Laboratory, a Behavior Laboratory, an Immunohistochemistry Laboratory, a Biomechanics Laboratory, and a Bio-materials Laboratory. The main equipment in the key lab includes a laser scanning confocal microscope, a nerve cell tracing instrument, a stereotaxic instrument, an animal ventilator, a large-scale biochemical automatic analyzer, an experimental animals of the C-arm, a multi-function microplate reader, a frozen slicer, a hard tissue slicer, a large the biomechanics machines, a PCR instrument and a Micro-CT, etc.
The laboratory currently has obtained various types of research projects more than fifty, including six National Natural Science Foundations, thirty-seven provincial Ministry of Science and Technology Plans, two horizontal collaborations, and six other related programs. About fifty scientific papers per year are published and one to two national patents per year are authorized, among which eight to ten papers are cited in SCI. Recently, the laboratory won the second awards of Gansu's Science and Technology Progress twice, and the third awards of Gansu's Science and Technology Progress once, and the second awards of Lanzhou's Science and Technology Progress five times.
Based on the Second Clinical Medical College of Lanzhou University, the key laboratory recruits and trains the postgraduates (two doctoral and fifteen master students per year) majoring in Surgery (Orthopedics). The laboratory positively carries out academic exchanges. For example, the laboratory holds one to two academic annual meeting every year, invites domestic and abroad professional researchers to lecture and cooperate scientifically. In addition, the laboratory selects the outstanding personnel abroad for trainings or attending the international academic conferences.
With the solid and powerful foundation, the laboratory is undertaking a noticeable spurt in research as well as in self-developing.
