At the invitation of the School of Journalism and Communication, Lanzhou University, Prof. Murdock from London South Bank University, has visited LZU and gave lectures about Sources of Information in the UK on public policy and Social Charities and communication to the students from the School of Journalism and Communication on 7th and 8th June.
Zhang Minhua, dean of the School of Journalism and Communication,Jing Wang, party’s vice secretary of the school have attended the lectures, along with associate prof. Zhao Nan, who has hosted and interpreted the lectures.
During the lectures, Prof. Murdock listed a large number of British website resources which have great reference values for research. When talking about British newspaper media, Prof. Murdock used 'Financial Times' as an example, from the global financial market data analysis on the front page, to the unique style of the newspaper. He clarified the importance of promoting the specialty for one newspaper: focus more on data analysis, less on political point of views.
When responding to questions raised by students, Prof. Murdock pointed out that, in the new media era, which the internet is filled with all kinds of information, the low-cost of information spreading and disseminator’s anonymity situation will lead to information’s authenticity decrease. All the students who attended the lecture, as journalists in the future, should set up higher standards for themselves in this respect. When accessing and spreading information, we must confirm the credibility first, otherwise the information you spread will damage your own reputation. In England, everybody treats their reputation seriously, so they are very careful on dealing with the internet information. Meanwhile, Prof. Murdock gave students useful suggestions, “To be a good journalist, is like driving a car, only learning from the books is far from enough, you need to search into the society and put into practice.”
