Taking "Dryland Agriculture Cooperation and Food Security under Climate Change" as the theme, 2012 China-Kenya Forum on Dryland Agriculture Collaboration was hosted at LZU from August 29th to September 3rd, 2012. The forum was jointly organized by LZU and five Kenyan institutions including Kenyan Ministry of Agriculture, University of Nairobi, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya Agriculture Research Institute and South Eastern University College.
Since 2011, LZU has cooperated with Kenya Agriculture Research Institute to implement an international cooperation project supported by Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology named Cooperative Development and Demonstration of Water-saving Dryland Agricultural Techniques in Africa. In the Katumani Test Center, two sides have carried out a series of work including developing arid farming technology, popularizing quality dryland corn and wheat and relevant germplasm resources, latest water-saving technology and personnel training. Till now, the field- tests have made important progress, and attracted great concerns and continuous reporting by medias including United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Xinhua News Agency, China-Africa Magazine, Tencent and Gansu Daily. All the above has laid a solid foundation for the Forum.
After the forum, representatives drafted a further cooperation plan to introduce to Kenya the arid and semi-arid water-saving agricultural technology in northwestern China, in order to enhance its grain production capacity. LZU will provide support in introduction of fine dryland plants, water-saving cultivation technology and improvement of farming tools.
