Introduction to the lecture:

This study of the rise of China’s solar photovoltaic (PV) industry from state-owned obscurity to global dominance uncovers a striking contrast in the challenges and strategic actions by the private entrepreneurs who entered at different points in the industry’s development. The early entrants—the “explorers”—not only had to develop an effective organizational capability to pursue a far-from-certain market opportunity, but also had to establish the legitimacy of the private Chinese firm as a viable organizational form. Later entrants—the “exploiters”—had the relatively simpler challenge of integrating existing resources and leveraging the institutional legitimacy established by the earlier explorers to meet a clear market opportunity.
