From October 27th to October 31st, the finals of International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition, organized by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was held in Boston, the United States. Three hundred and one teams from the famous universities of 32 countries and regions participated in the finals. The team of Lanzhou University won the silver medal in the finals.
The team of Lanzhou University is composed of students from the Cuiying Honors College and School of Life Sciences, including 14 undergraduates, 1 postgraduate and 1 doctor. The directors are Prof. Tang Yu offrom the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Prof. Feng Huyuan, Prof. Yang Jinbo and Prof. Li Xiangkai and lecturer Ling Zhenmin offrom the School of Life Sciences. The project is entitled as "Reduced bioaccumulated heavy metals in fish by gut remediation", that is, polypeptide, which can combine with the specificity of heavy metals through biosynthesis, can play a rolefunction in the cell membrane with the aid of ice crystal nucleoprotein; feeding the fish polypeptide, it can take the place of the heavy metals in fish, thus reducing the bioaccumulated heavy metals in the fish body and consequently, thus reducing the intake of heavy metals of human beings. This method is called "metal catcher" and the results are highly praised by environment group of the meeting.
