2017 Discovery Program of Joint Fieldwork in Geography for Universities in Mainland and Hong Kong

July 15th saw the conclusion of the Discovery Program - the joint practice in geography for universities in 2017. This event covered 82 teachers and students from 10 universities, including LZU, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University and Xinjiang Normal University. They passed through three natural zones - Eastern monsoon region, Qinghai-Tibetan alpine region and arid region of northwest China, crossed over four provinces (Gansu, Sichuan, Qinghai and Inner Mongolia). The journey covered 6000 kilometers, making a comprehensive and skill-oriented geographical survey in the field.

The Discovery Program was held by Division for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs of LZU, and undertaken by College of Earth and Environment Sciences. The initiation of practice was on July 2nd in the Guanyun Building. Wang Nai'ang, the program manager, interpreted the connotation of Discovery Program as "Discover the secrets of nature, enjoy the charm of science, review the past of human, and explore the future of us" for students. During the practice in the field, keeping the spirit that “read a million books and travel a million miles;travel a million miles and read the world”, everyone practically obtained the method and skill for geographical survey in the field.     

As one of teaching activities, Discovery Program for undergraduates held by Geography Base of LZU, the joint practice aimed at communication, cooperation and progress in education quality. With the help of this activity, students and teachers from both mainland and Hong Kong have appreciated grand natural scenery and varied ethnic cultures along the Silk Road, thus improving improved their professional knowledge and interests. Meanwhile, the exemplary effect and position of Geography Base of LZU has been properly achieved.
