On August 5 to 10, selected by Ministry of Agriculture, Prof. Shen Yuying of School of Pastoral Agricultural Science and Technology went to Costa Rica to attend the second plenary meeting of FAO's Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance Alliance (LEAP). The meeting place, the headquarter of International Center for Agricultural Technology and Education (CATIE) is located in Turrilba, Costa Rica. 28 representatives from China, New Zealand Land Use Research Institute, Queensland University of Technology in Australia, British Agriculture Food and Biological Research Institute, the European Dairy Association, the French Ministry of agriculture (INRA), the Canadian Ministry of Agriculture and German Climate-Smart Agriculture Research Institute attended the meeting.
LEAP is an international organization, jointly sponsored in 2012 by many countries and subordinated to United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). It aims to strengthen the theory and method of environmental assessment internationally, and to improve environmental performance of livestock supply chain. The main task of this meeting is to discuss and revise guidelines for the performance and carbon sequestration assessment of grassland livestock produced at the first meeting. The new edition will be completed by the end of November and officially published after a rigorous review.
On August 11, Shen Yuying continued in CATIE to participate in "Multi-functional Grassland" seminar, sponsored by FAO and CATI. Meanwhile, FAO, the World Bank, the Global Research Alliance (GRA), CATIE and other countries and institutions also sent delegates there. A full discussion will be made by the participants on the issues of improving the public's awareness of grassland, food producing in grassland, and multi-functional services as well as how to maximize the use of multifunctional grasslands in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
